Reasons for Barking

Dogs bark for many different reasons: excitement, boredom, warning, anxious, frustrated, needs something (food, toilet)
Sometimes, in a neighborhood where there are several dogs, it only takes one to start barking and it sets the rest of them off.

There are a wide range of methods on the market that can help to stop dogs from barking. These methods can be beneficial for immediate relief, to keep the neighbors happy in the short term but they don't address the root cause of the dogs barking.

Dogs bark because that's how they communicate. People talk, cats meow, All animals make some sort of sound. Some dogs bark more often than others. This can quite easily develop into nuisance barking.
Once you are sure there aren't any other reasons why the dog is barking, the best thing to do in this case is to teach a "quiet" command. " Quiet" should be taught using a marker, such as a clicker. When the dog stops barking, click and reward. As you give the reward, you could say, "Good, quiet." By using the word "quiet" as you reward the dog, he will begin to associate the word with being quiet.

After a few sessions, you can attempt to say "quiet" when the dog barks. If the dog has learned the sound of the word, it should stop. If it doesn't stop barking, do not continue to give the command. Just wait until it does stop and then mark it with a click and a reward. As you continue with your sessions, you will also want to start giving the treats every now and then, and not every time the dog stops barking.

In extreme cases, where you cannot stop dog from barking, and where you are getting complaints from neighbors, there are various devices that can be used to discourage barking by emitting an unpleasant sound or odour or an electronic correction. However, these should not be used as a quick fix. You should consult with a professional on the proper use of them, as they can be harmful if not used correctly.

A dog should not be corrected when anxious, It will need to be calmed first.
